President Ramaphosa calls for unified continental action against spreading Ebola outbreak

South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa says the country remains fully committed to championing the African Union’s (AU) pandemic preparedness efforts and bolstering the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to curb the regional spread of Ebola.

Ramaphosa made the remarks while addressing the media in Sandton, Johannesburg, following his keynote address at the SA National Leadership Convening on Youth Employment.

Expressing deep concern over cross-border transmission of the virus from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) into Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria, Ramaphosa described the expanding health crisis as a calamity that demands immediate and unified continental intervention.

Underlining SA’s role as the AU Champion on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response, Ramaphosa urged member states to step up cross-border health surveillance and support Africa CDC-led co-ordination mechanisms to protect vulnerable populations and contain the outbreak.
