Masemola says three persons of interest have been identified and one has already been questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Van der Merwe was shot and killed in front of his family in the driveway of their home east of the city of Johannesburg, on Friday evening.
He had testified that the Deputy Police Chief in the city of Ekurhuleni, Julius Mkhwanazi requested that the body of an alleged shop owner be removed and dumped away from a crime scene in the town of Brakpan and was allegedly called in to assist in cleaning up the scene.
Masemola says investigations are on the right track.
“We are confident that we will register a breakthrough as police remain on high alert for those behind the killing of Van Der Merwe. It is safe to say investigations are on the right track. The National Joints together with the Commission security have met over the last two/three days to develop a plan to enhance security around officials and witnesses linked to the commission,” he said.
