A match-winning performance by star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has kept South Africa (SA) alive in the International Cricket Council Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.
The SAa’s cricket team, Proteas beat 50-over World Cup champions, India, by six wickets with five balls to spare in their do-or-die Group One match at Old Trafford in Manchester.
India, who chose to bat, were restricted to 158 for the loss of seven wickets. Kapp was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of two for 27 from her four overs.
She then smashed an unbeaten 81 off only 45 deliveries, underlining her status as the world’s leading all-rounder, as the Proteas replied with 161 for four.
It was the first time SA managed to successfully chase a score in excess of 150 in a T20 World Cup match. With matches against the Netherlands and Bangladesh remaining, the Proteas’ destiny is now in their own hands.
