Scores of people have been arrested as police deployed teargas and water cannons to disperse youths protesting election results in towns and villages across Cameroon.
Demonstrators claimed discrepancies between the figures released by the national elections management body, ELECAM, and those they recorded at polling stations.
The unrest has been reported in several cities, including the economic hub Douala, where public buildings, vehicles, and some homes were set alight. Government offices, including local branches of ELECAM, were among the targets of the demonstrators, many of whom were young people expressing anger over what they see as manipulated vote counts in favour of incumbent President Paul Biya.
There has also been a heavy military presence deployed in areas considered opposition strongholds, as authorities seek to restore order. Moki Kindzeka reports from Yaoundé, Cameroon that the unrest has affected daily life across affected towns and villages, with residents witnessing violent clashes between protesters and security forces.
