The South African (SA) Red Cross Society is assessing the extent of damage caused by strong winds in the farming town of Koppies, in Free State province.
Several houses have reportedly been damaged, with roofs blown off, as strong winds and rainfall continue in parts of the province.
Koppies is located in the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, near the Renoster River. The Ngwathe Local Municipality confirms that the Renoster River runs through the area and is part of the region’s drainage system.
The Red Cross says it is providing humanitarian assistance to households affected by the severe weather.
Provincial Manager Claudia Mini says, “In Fezile dabi we have koppies, that are currently affected, we also have Gariep, followed by Edenburg and Thabo Mufutsanyana, where our volunteers are on the ground with the disaster management centre, including municipalities. We are trying to finalise our assessment, with the current persisting wind and rainfall.”
The Red Cross says its volunteers are working with disaster management authorities and municipalities in the affected areas as the assessment continues.
