Red Cross launches $31m appeal to aid Somalia’s worsening humanitarian crisis

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an emergency appeal for $31m to support the Somali Red Crescent Society in responding to a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Somalia is facing a devastating combination of failed rains, food shortages, and collapsing local systems, leaving millions of people struggling to survive. The country is still reeling from its worst drought in 40 years, compounded by catastrophic floods in 2023.

The IFRC warns that many communities have been forced to rely on coping strategies such as sharing scarce resources, migrating in search of water, selling livestock, and reducing meals. However, these measures are now proving insufficient to meet the growing needs.

The appeal aims to provide urgent assistance, including food, clean water, and health support, to help vulnerable populations weather the escalating crisis.
