Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed profound grief and shock following the death of prominent businessperson Wicknell Chivayo, who was killed alongside his wife, Lucy Muteke, and four others in a helicopter crash in Marondera on Wednesday evening.
In an official statement, Mnangagwa described himself as numb with sorrow, offering condolences to the bereaved families and highlighting Chivayo’s contributions to national business and philanthropy.
Regional tributes have also mounted, with Kenyan President William Ruto honoring Chivayo as a close personal friend whose generosity and warmth touched lives across the continent.
The private helicopter went down at approximately 17:00 CAT in the Marondera rural area east of Harare, killing all six occupants on board, including two pilots and four passengers.
