Envoy linked to US President Donald Trump has reportedly approached FIFA with a proposal to replace Iran with Italy at the upcoming World Cup

An envoy linked to United States (US) President Donald Trump has reportedly approached FIFA with a proposal to replace Iran with Italy at the upcoming World Cup.

According to a report by the Financial Times, the move is said to be part of efforts to mend strained relations between Trump and Giorgia Meloni following disagreements linked to his criticism of Pope Leo XIV over the war involving Iran.

However, the proposal appears unlikely to gain traction. Italy failed to qualify for the tournament after losing a decisive play-off to Bosnia and Herzegovina in March, while Iran has already secured its place.

An Iranian government Spokesperson has insisted the country is fully prepared to take part in the global showpiece, confirming that all necessary arrangements have been put in place for the team’s participation.

The World Cup, set to be co-hosted by US, Mexico and Canada, is expected to go ahead with its confirmed line-up, with no indication from FIFA that any late changes are under consideration.
