Rotary District 9400 has launched a four-day programme focused on food security, hunger solutions and community upliftment across Southern Africa, with a $94 000 aquaponics grant set to support efforts to combat hunger.

The programme, running until May 18, spans Botswana, Eswatini, southern Mozambique and northern South Africa (SA). Activities include diaspora mobilisation, diplomacy and development of corporate partnerships.
Speaking during the launch in SA’s Johannesburg township of Soweto, Thabang Chiloane, Media and Government Liaison for Rotary District 9400, stated that hunger remains a persistent challenge in the region, despite perceptions of improved food access.

Chiloane said communities across the district continue to face food insecurity, with many people unable to access sufficient daily meals. Chiloane described the aquaponics initiative as a scalable solution that will be expanded across Southern Africa.

The grant will fund the construction of an aquaponics unit and training for local operators. Chiloane said the system combines fish farming with water-based vegetable production, using fish waste to nourish crops without soil or pesticides.

Chiloane explained that the system will include a 24-hour solar installation, enabling faster crop cycles and lower energy costs. Chiloane said vegetables such as lettuce can be harvested within two to three weeks, improving food supply and reducing costs.

Chiloane added that the model supports a circular economy, with fish harvested after six to seven months and replaced by new stock. Chiloane said the system will provide affordable nutrition while creating income opportunities for local communities through the resale of produce.

The grant will be presented at Desmond Tutu House, which will become the SA headquarters of The Desmond Tutu Programme to End Global Hunger. Chiloane said the location reflects the legacy of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who supported similar initiatives.

Chiloane highlighted that the programme also strengthens regional cooperation. Chiloane said Rotary plays a role in building cross-border partnerships while promoting peacebuilding across the continent.
Chiloane noted that the Rotary International President-Elect, a Nigerian national, is attending the event, reinforcing efforts to deepen collaboration across African countries.

Chiloane said the initiative demonstrates how coordinated regional action can address hunger while supporting livelihoods and economic development.
