Political observers have cautioned that the historic agreement signed in Washington between the Presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), brokered by United States (US) President Donald Trump, could risk intensifying exploitation rather than ending the region’s longstanding conflicts.

The pact, promoted as a breakthrough, commits the two countries to de-escalation, economic co-operation, and billions of Dollars in Western investment.

Lionel Nditabiriye, a Kigali-based political analyst and editor of the Pan-African Review, noted that while the deal aims to stabilise the region, there is a real danger that economic benefits may favour foreign investors more than local communities, potentially leading to renewed tensions.

Although the agreement has been welcomed internationally as a step toward peace, experts say careful implementation and protections are crucial to ensure that economic integration genuinely supports local populations and lasting stability.
