Rwanda has announced that it will nominate Louise Mushikiwabo for a third term as Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, according to Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe, in an interview with Jeune Afrique magazine.
With just 10 months to go before the 20th Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Kigali has moved early as Mushikiwabo’s second term comes to an end this year. The deadline for submitting candidacies is set for the end of April.
The announcement comes amid growing discussions over who will succeed Mushikiwabo, with the Democratic Republic of Congo seen as a potential contender for the role at the upcoming summit.
Speaking to local media, political analyst Jean Donald Taladzi said; “Rwanda’s early nomination of Mushikiwabo is a strategic move to maintain influence within the Francophonie. At the same time, the competition for succession highlights the evolving political dynamics in the organisation, particularly as new voices from Africa seek representation at its highest levels.”
