Rwanda and Russia have signed a military and technical co-operation agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration in the defence sector.
The agreement comes at a time when Rwanda is facing increased international scrutiny, including sanctions imposed by the United States against individuals and entities linked to the country’s military activities.
Speaking from Kigali, journalist Sylvanus Karemera said the agreement reflects Rwanda’s efforts to diversify its international partnerships and maintain strategic co-operation with a range of global powers.
According to Karemera, the deal is not only about military co-operation but also forms part of Rwanda’s broader foreign policy strategy to strengthen bilateral relations and expand opportunities in areas such as defence technology, training and security co-operation.
The agreement is expected to facilitate exchanges of expertise, technical support and collaboration between the armed forces of the two countries.
The signing also comes as Rwanda continues to play a significant role in regional security operations, particularly in the Great Lakes region and northern Mozambique, where Rwandan forces have been deployed to help combat insurgent groups.
