Khumalo is currently serving as a Commissioner on the Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
According to AFT, the threats were communicated through multiple cellular phone numbers and appear to be linked to disciplinary proceedings involving a member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates (JSA).
The organisation said a preliminary inquiry had traced the threats to matters arising from professional misconduct proceedings within the legal profession.
At the time of the disciplinary process, Khumalo chaired the JSA Professional Committee and served on the JSA Bar Council after being nominated by the society.
AFT said the intimidation of legal practitioners performing professional duties posed a threat to the integrity of disciplinary and oversight processes within the profession.
The organisation expressed concern that attempts to intimidate senior advocates could undermine accountability mechanisms and the independence of legal institutions.
