South Africa (SA) has commended Zimbabwe’s efforts to modernise the Beitbridge Border Post, describing plans to expand the crossing infrastructure as critical to improving regional trade and easing congestion at Africa’s busiest land border.
The SA and Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission Mid-Term Review was co-chaired with Zimbabwe’s Permanent Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ambassador Albert Ranganai Chimbindi and SA’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Deputy Director-General Tebogo Seokolo.
The Senior Officials meeting held in Pretoria, Gauteng Province, served as a preparatory platform for the 4th Session of the Zimbabwe and SA Bi-National Commission, which is scheduled to take place in SA in July.
The meeting brought together senior government representatives from both countries to assess progress made on previous agreements and strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors including trade, transport, infrastructure, energy and border management.
Officials also reviewed outstanding issues requiring attention ahead of the high-level commission, which is expected to further deepen political and economic relations between Harare and Pretoria.
In his opening remarks, Seokolo praised Zimbabwe’s ongoing infrastructure development efforts at the Beitbridge Border Post.
