Ramaphosa appoints Stella Ndabeni as Acting Health Minister

South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams as the country’s Acting Minister of Health while Dr Aaron Motsoaledi remains on sick leave.

The appointment, made under Section 98 of the SA Constitution, takes effect immediately this Monday, August 24, 2026, and will run through to September 30, 2026, according to a statement released by The Presidency.

Under the temporary arrangement, Ndabeni-Abrahams will take over all executive powers and operational duties within the health portfolio to maintain government continuity.

“Minister Ndabeni will undertake all functions of the Minister of Health for the said period while Minister Motsoaledi remains on sick leave,” confirmed Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

Government officials have not disclosed further details regarding the nature of Motsoaledi’s health condition or his recovery timeline beyond the temporary leave period.
