SA bid to host historic first African Olympics enters formal contest

South Africa (SA) has officially entered the formal contest to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, joining a seven-nation bidding pool alongside India, Qatar, South Korea, Germany, Hungary, and Turkey.

Confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), SA’s national proposal, centered on Cape Town, could bring the flagship multi-sport event to the African continent for the first time in modern Olympic history.

Under IOC President Kirsty Coventry, the selection process marks a return to a open and contested vote by the full 100-plus IOC membership, reversing the targeted single-candidate approach previously used to select host cities.

The IOC Executive Board will approve an official shortlist of candidates in March 2027, with virtual project presentations scheduled for November and the final host election set for mid-2029.
