The Border Management Authority (BMA) in South Africa (SA) has intercepted 33 undocumented and unaccompanied minors at the Beit Bridge border post
BMA Spokesperson, Mmemme Mogotsi says the children, aged between four and 15, were being transported from SA to Zimbabwe. Mogotsi says two Zimbabwean nationals who were transporting the children were arrested and charged with smuggling of the children across the border. She says the children were handed to the Social Development department for further processing.
“The border management authority will not tolerate the exploitation of children or the facilitation of illegal cross-border movement. We remain committed to protecting the integrity of our borders while upholding human rights and child protection principles. Investigations are ongoing and suspects are expected to appear in court this week,” she said.
