South Africa (SA) have bowled themselves back into the contest on day two of the first cricket Test against India in Kolkata.

India, who resumed their first innings on 37 for one in reply to the Proteas’ 159 all out, were dismissed for 189 midway through the post-lunch session, a modest lead of just 30 runs.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer and left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen were central to SA’s fightback, sharing seven wickets between them. Harmer delivered an excellent spell, taking four for 30 in 15 overs and two deliveries, while Jansen provided key breakthroughs from the other end.

India also suffered a setback when Captain Shubman Gill retired hurt after facing just three deliveries and did not return to complete his innings, further disrupting the home side’s momentum.

The match remains finely poised heading into day three.
