The dispute over the remains of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has taken a new turn, with South Africa’s (SA) Two Mountains Burial Services siding with the Zambian government in the ongoing court battle.
In papers filed at the High Court of SA in Pretoria, the funeral services company argues that the Lungu family went to court seeking an urgent order for the return of his remains without fully disclosing key details.
Two Mountains further contends that the family’s current legal position stems from missed steps in their appeal process at the Supreme Court of Appeal of SA, saying they are “the authors of their own misfortune” in how the matter has unfolded.
The company’s stance mirrors that of the Zambian government, which has also questioned the basis of the family’s latest court application.
The latest filings come just ahead of a reconsideration application by the Zambian government, which is expected to be heard on Thursday at 10:00 CAT, as the legal dispute over Lungu’s burial arrangements continues to drag on.
