South Africa’s (SA) Cabinet has described the coronation of an alleged Nigerian Igbo king in KuGompo in the Eastern Cape province as a mere kindergarten gimmick that has no legal effect.
Violent protests erupted in various areas of the country, including KuGompo, this week following the coronation.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni expressed disgust at the coronation during a post-cabinet meeting media briefing in Pretoria.
She says, “Cabinet noted the apology from the Nigerian High Commission on this matter and directed Department of International Relations and Co-operation to continue engaging with the High Commission on the unacceptable conduct of Nigerians in SA that is unbecoming of visitors. We must remind them that they are visitors in this country. It is deeply concerning that legitimate grievances over this matter have resulted in acts of violence and criminality.”
