South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has renewed calls for accelerated infrastructure investment across the continent, saying it is key to economic growth, inclusive development and Africa’s long-term resilience.
Speaking during a virtual meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Presidential Infrastructure Champion Initiative, Ramaphosa highlighted infrastructure as a critical enabler of continental integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
He noted that Africa could double its Gross Domestic Product by 2040 if infrastructure spending is significantly scaled up.
Ramaphosa also emphasised the importance of political leadership. in driving major infrastructure projects across the continent.
“The role of the champions is to bring visibility and unblock bottlenecks for resource mobilisation and ensure project mobilisation. It presents an opportunity for African Heads of State and Governments to be actively involved in the development and implementation of projects.” said Ramaphosa.
