SA has consistently positioned itself as a defender of multilateralism.
South Africa (SA)  has reiterated the need for strict adherence to international law, warning that violations threaten the stability of the global system. The call was made during a special session of the United Nations Security Council, where member states debated recent US military action against Venezuela.
Delivering SA’s statement, Acting Deputy Permanent Representative Jonathan Pass Moor cautioned that disregarding the UN Charter undermines the credibility of international institutions and the rules-based order.
“Unfortunately, when countries ignore the Charter and its central premise, it undermines the credibility of the entire system within which we all conduct our international relations,” Pass Moor said.
He stressed that global stability depends not only on respect for international law, but also on its consistent application.
“The stability of the international system depends on respect for, and the consistent application of, established legal norms. We all benefit from a rules-based international order grounded in international law. When those norms are broken, we invite anarchy and an environment where might makes right,” he added.
SA has consistently positioned itself as a defender of multilateralism, calling on all nations to resolve disputes through dialogue and in line with international legal frameworks.
