WeByCars has been required to pay an administrative fine of R2.5 million ($149 000) and refund more than R3.4 million ($203 000) to customers

South African (SA) used car dealer WeByCars has been required to pay an administrative fine of R2.5 million ($149 000) and refund more than R3.4 million ($203 000) to customers after a three-year investigation by the National Consumer Commission (NCC) found the company in violation of consumer protection laws.

According to the NCC, multiple consumers reported that WeByCars failed to provide redress in line with the terms and conditions of sale. As part of a settlement confirmed by the tribunal on December 19, the company must also pay the administrative fine and issue the refunds.

The ruling further requires WeByCars to update its terms and conditions to comply fully with the Consumer Protection Act, ensuring customers’ rights are protected in future transactions.
