The South African (SA) Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has emphasised the importance of maintaining the country’s impeccable safety record in the skies.

This, amid ongoing operational disruptions affecting several local airlines.

The disruptions have been linked to delays by the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) in renewing essential flight procedures at multiple airports. The delays come at a challenging time as ATNS undergoes a turnaround process to address its operational difficulties.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has expressed serious concern over the situation, noting the potential impact on air travel and passenger safety. SACAA Director Poppy Khoza stressed the authority’s commitment to preserving aviation safety and the country’s “zero fatalities” status in the airline sector.

“Ours is really to ensure that aviation safety is preserved, and that we do not put anyone at risk. Our record of a 0% accident rate, particularly in the airline sector, is something we must uphold,” Khoza said.

She added that SACAA, as the regulator, will not approve any procedures that are substandard and that all flight operations passing through its oversight undergo rigorous checks. “If there are any flight procedures that are not fit to be flown, we are able to withdraw them,” Khoza said.
