Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Nigeria’s Remo Stars, while Orlando Pirates travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to face FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo. Both matches form part of the second preliminary round, with first legs scheduled for October 18 and return fixtures the following week. A place in the group stages, and tougher challenges beyond, hangs in the balance.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, two other SA sides are also set for a testing start. Stellenbosch FC will travel to Equatorial Guinea to play FC 15 de Agosto de Akonibe, while Kaizer Chiefs await the winner of the tie between AS Simba (DRC) and Djabal FC (Comoros). Both second preliminary round fixtures are slated for mid-October, with progression to the group stages at stake.
The early rounds promise intense contests as SA clubs aim to assert themselves on the continental stage and chase CAF glory.
