South Africa’s (SA) Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, Ronald Lamola, has commended Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia for making measurable progress in combating severe hunger across Southern Africa.
Speaking in Durban ahead of the regional bloc’s Summit of Heads of State and Government, Lamola, who chairs the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers, praised the four nations for pushing back the frontiers of food insecurity despite persistent climate and economic challenges.
However, addressing delegates at the 46th SADC Ministerial Council Meeting, he warned that the region still faces a acute humanitarian crisis, with approximately 58 million people facing severe food insecurity.
Lamola urged member states to urgently accelerate coordinated regional interventions, pointing out that food scarcity remains closely linked to widespread poverty, inequality, and rising youth unemployment across the 16-member economic community.
