South African (SA) Communist Party General Secretary (SACP) Solly Mapaila says the party rejects what it describes as attempts by the ruling party African National Congress’s (ANC) National Executive Committee leadership to turn a technical disagreement into an administrative and disciplinary ultimatum against communists within the ANC.
Mapaila was briefing the media in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, following the ANC’s stance on the SACP’s decision to contest the 2026 local government elections independently.
He argues that directives issued by the ANC including calls for declarations from SACP members and warnings of action against those involved in the party’s election campaign amount to a serious anti‑communist political move.
Mapaila warns that such actions could have far reaching consequences, potentially altering the character of the ANC and undermining the long standing Tripartite Alliance.
