South African (SA) communities and civil society organisations across Gauteng Province, are taking to the streets in a series of marches and protests, demanding greater police accountability and stronger action to protect women.
The demonstrations follow the discovery of the bodies of nine women in the province in less than two months, raising renewed concerns about the safety of women and the effectiveness of efforts to combat gender-based violence.
Protesters are calling for authorities to strengthen investigations, improve policing and ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
NotInMyName International has called on SA, particularly men, to speak out against violence against women, saying silence amounts to complicity.
The organisation says communities cannot claim to love their mothers, sisters and daughters while remaining passive in the face of violence against women.
