South Africa (SA) has condemned the unconstitutional seizure of power by the military in Guinea-Bissau

Pretoria says the timing demonstrates a profound disregard for the constitutional order and the sovereign will of the people of Guinea-Bissau. Coup-prone Guinea is home to just over 2 million people.

It has experienced at least nine coups and attempted coups between 1974, when it gained independence from Portugal, and 2020, when the now-ousted President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, took office. Presidential Spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya says Africa must not tolerate unconstitutional changes.

“In unwavering support of the African Union’s principle of zero tolerance of unconstitutional change of government. SA calls for an immediate restoration of legitimate civilian government and unhindered completion of electoral process,” he said.
