SA’s Department of Agriculture confirms African Horse Sickness case in Western Cape

South Africa’s (SA) Department of Agriculture has confirmed a case of African Horse Sickness (AHS) in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape.

Agriculture Minister Willie Aucamp confirmed that laboratory tests conducted by the University of Pretoria verified the presence of the virus in a horse located within the country’s designated Horse Sickness Zone.

While investigations remain ongoing, Aucamp noted that there is currently no evidence of widespread transmission beyond the affected property. As a precautionary measure, officials have halted the issuance of movement permits for horses leaving the immediate area until further notice to contain potential risks.
