South Africa’s (SA) Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, has expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of two SA National Defence Force members who tragically drowned in the Komati River in the Mpumalanga province
The two soldiers died when their vehicle was swept away while trying to cross the flooded river on Christmas Day. The first body was recovered the day after the incident. The remains, believed to be that of the missing soldier, were discovered about two kilometres from the location of the incident, near the border between Mozambique and SA. Motshekga says tests have been conducted.
“Their main concern was their remains. Like any family, they just want what is left of their child so that they can find closure and that is why the psychologist and the chaplains is dealing with them to really help them deal with the wait whilst the search is on. Because the biggest anxiety is to find the remains now so that they can find closure now and can move on,” she said.
