South Africa’s (SA) Deputy Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Mmapaseka Steve Letsike says the focus should be on prevention in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s four-point plan to tackle gender-based violence and femicide.
Ramaphosa announced the plan in a televised address last night, directing that a national case recovery operation be conducted within 60 days to identify unresolved Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) cases, that a funded plan be developed to reduce forensic backlogs, and that a plan be created to curb alcohol-related violence.
Letsike says while the directives are welcome, the second point on prevention needs more attention if the cycle of violence is to be broken.
