South Africa (SA) and Ecuador are moving to strengthen bilateral economic ties by identifying strategic trade opportunities in agricultural exports and mineral extraction.
Speaking at the Ecuadorian Embassy in Pretoria, Ecuadorian Ambassador to SA Mauricio Montalvo Samaniego highlighted mutual economic complementarities, identifying Ecuadorian cacao, chocolate, and seafood exports as prime growth sectors for the SA market.
In turn, Samaniego expressed strong interest in leveraging SA’s deep-level mining expertise to expand Ecuador’s domestic resource sector.
Turning to global multilateral diplomacy, Samaniego addressed the ongoing selection process for the next United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, as António Guterres prepares to conclude his final term on December 31.
Noting that traditional regional rotation favours Latin America and the Caribbean for the upcoming mandate beginning January 1, 2027, Samaniego confirmed that two Ecuadorian candidates are among the 7 remaining contenders currently under consideration by the UN Security Council.
