South Africa’s (SA) Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says government is looking at rebuilding its oil refining capacity in the medium to long term.

Ntshavheni’s comments come amid rising fuel prices and supply challenges due to the US-Israel and Iran conflict.

She briefed the media on the post-cabinet meeting outcomes in Pretoria today.

“Because if you check, the semblance of refining capacity is in SA and Ali Dangote in Nigeria. That is not safe for a continent to be reliant on other continents. And therefore, it is our responsibility as the leading economy in the continent to develop a reliable refining capacity not only for ourselves, but that could also supply the region and the continent. It’s part of those things that we are considering.”
