Health Experts say South Africa (SA)  is facing a severe health challenge. This after the Global Burden of Disease forecasts a massive 181% surge in dementia prevalence by 2050.

This is an almost threefold increase.

Experts say an ageing population and longer life expectancy are largely driving the situation.

Neurologist Doctor Harsha Patel says the most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s dementia followed by vascular dementia which requires looking at vascular risk factors such as dyslipidemia or high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension and sedentary lifestyle.
