South Africa’s (SA) Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has highlighted the important role of pension funds in protecting the financial stability of ordinary South Africans.
Godongwana was delivering the keynote address at the Financial Sector Conduct Authority Conference in Cape Town in the Western Cape province.
It was hosted alongside the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors.
The gathering focused on enhancing member experiences to secure retirement futures.
Godongwana says the global economy has experienced some turbulence.
“We have come through a period in which the global economy has had to absorb a succession of shocks. As the International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlights in its July 2026 World Economic Outlook Update, geopolitical tensions and trade fragmentation continue to weigh on the outlook, while renewed inflationary pressures and episodes of financial-market volatility have complicated the economic environment. We need to think increasingly about retirement systems that follow the worker, rather than simply the job; systems that make it easier for self-employed, informal and other non-standard workers to participate and to continue saving.”
