Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has confirmed that there are currently no planned relief measures for motorists ahead of expected fuel price increases

South Africa’s (SA) Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has confirmed that there are currently no planned relief measures for motorists ahead of expected fuel price increases in April, largely driven by the conflict in the Middle East.

According to the latest data from the Central Energy Fund, petrol is set to rise by over R5 per litre ($0.27), while diesel could increase by more than R9 per litre ($0.49).

Motorists will also face additional levies next month, including the general fuel levy, carbon fuel tax, and the Road Accident Fund levy.

Speaking at a virtual briefing, Department Spokesperson Robert Maake said fuel price adjustments would be announced at the end of the week.

“In 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, petrol prices reached over R26 per litre ($1.40), prompting government interventions. Currently, petrol sits at R20.30 ($1.10) per litre. We do not know if any measures will be implemented, as these discussions are taking place at a different level in government. Any interventions will be communicated through official channels,” Maake said.
