SA declares the severe storms national disaster

The South African (SA) government has declared the severe storms affecting several provinces a national disaster.

Provinces including the North West, Free State, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga have been hit by floods, thunderstorms, damaging winds and snowfall in some areas.

The severe weather has disrupted essential services, including schooling, prompting calls for urgent intervention.

The country’s Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs says the funds will be released to support recovery and relief efforts.
