South Africa’s (SA) Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration has praised citizens, community leaders and the police for ensuring that nationwide protests over illegal immigration remained largely peaceful on Tuesday.
The committee says the demonstrations showed that SA citizens can express their concerns through lawful protest while respecting the rights and dignity of others.
The marches, organised by anti-illegal immigration groups, took place in several cities, including the capital, Pretoria Gauteng Province.
However, the Committee says police have responded to isolated incidents of looting saying police will continue to identify, arrest and prosecute all those responsible for criminal conduct during the marches.
