The National Department of Health has issued an urgent public health warning following a rapid increase in mpox cases across South Africa (SA), with 18 confirmed cases and one probable case recorded nationwide.
According to health authorities, the Western Cape province has emerged as the epicentre of the latest uptick after recording the highest number of infections, followed by three cases in Gauteng and one in KwaZulu-Natal. The department confirmed it is also actively investigating a travel-related case involving an individual who returned to SA from Spain.
Department of Health Spokesperson Foster Mohale advised anyone who has come into close contact with an infected individual to monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop.
Mohale also stressed the critical importance of public co-operation and empathy to prevent infected individuals from delaying treatment.
“Individuals and communities are urged to support those diagnosed with mpox and those suspected of being infected with the virus, because stigma and discrimination have the potential to undermine an outbreak response by deterring people from seeking medical care on time,” Mohale stated.
