South Africa’s (SA) Department of Home Affairs is seeking reimbursement from Malawi, Nigeria and Ethiopia for the costs of repatriating foreign nationals as part of efforts to tackle illegal migration.
The department says it has spent about $18 million on the repatriation programme.
Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs that the department had not budgeted for the operation.
He added that the repatriation of foreign nationals was not provided for the department’s legislative framework.
