The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa (SA) has announced that applications for special votes for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections will officially open on September 21.
Briefing media representatives at its headquarters in Centurion, Gauteng province, the commission outlined the operational parameters for special vote eligibility following the formal finalisation of the candidate list.
Under electoral regulations, special votes accommodate registered voters who are unable to cast their ballots at a voting station on election day, scheduled for Wednesday, November 4. Qualifying categories include voters unable to travel due to physical infirmity, disability, or pregnancy, as well as essential service workers, media personnel, and voters who will be away from their registered voting districts on election day.
The IEC confirmed that home visits will be conducted for voters with severe physical limitations, while registered personnel and mobile voters must submit formal applications within the stipulated timeframe to secure early voting access.
