Celebrated annually on October 24, the day marks the establishment of the UN in 1945 and serves to promote global unity.
The United Nations (UN) in South Africa (SA), together with its partners, is today commemorating UN Day 2025 under the theme “UN80: A Legacy of Hope, Solidarity, and Action.”
Celebrated annually on October 24, the day marks the establishment of the UN in 1945 and serves to promote global unity, international co-operation, and the organisation’s work in advancing peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
The UN’s Resident Co-ordinator in SA, Nelson Muffuh, reflected on the organisation’s enduring mission, saying, “Born from the ashes of war, the UN was founded on a simple, powerful truth. Humanity is stronger when we stand together in the pursuit of peace, shared prosperity and human rights.” He added, “For SA, the story is deeply personal. The UN stood as a partner in the struggle against apartheid, committed to safeguarding peace and upholding human rights for all. Today, this promise lives on in every partnership, every policy and every community where the UN is at work.”
