In a statement released on Friday, the Lions paid tribute to Andrews and extended their condolences to his wife, Maiglin, their young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, and the wider Andrews family.
“Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go to Hyron’s wife, Maiglin, their young sons, and the entire Andrews family. We hold them in our thoughts during this time of unimaginable grief and ask that their privacy be respected as they mourn,” the statement read.
Lions Rugby Company chief executive Rudolf Straeuli also paid tribute to Andrews, describing him as a cherished member of the franchise. “We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron. He was not only a gifted rugby player, but also a cherished member of our Lions family having recently joined us this season,” Straeuli said.
“On behalf of our Chairman, Mr Altmann Allers, the board and everyone at the Lions, I extend our deepest sympathies to Maiglin, their young sons Hendrix and Emerson, and the entire Andrews family. We stand with them in their sorrow and will remember Hyron with great affection and respect.”
Andrews joined the Lions ahead of the new season after returning to SA from English Premiership club Sale Sharks, where he spent two seasons. He had also previously represented the Sharks.
Despite the loss, the Lions have confirmed they will proceed with their opening Investec Champions Cup match against La Rochelle on Saturday in honour of Andrews.
