Liquor traders across SA have voiced concern over plans by the National Treasury to raise alcohol taxes

Liquor traders across South Africa (SA) have voiced concern over plans by the National Treasury to raise alcohol taxes, warning that higher prices could harm businesses and fuel the illicit market.

Oupa Mthombeni, President of the Concerned Tshwane Liquor Traders Association, said increasing excise duties will not address issues such as underage drinking, sales to intoxicated customers, or alcohol use during pregnancy. He cautioned that a tax hike could drive consumers to cheaper, unregulated alcohol, creating challenges for both government and legitimate traders.

Traders say they are keen to work with authorities and law enforcement to curb illegal liquor sales, but insist that making legal alcohol more expensive may have the opposite effect.
