Tonight marks the fourth appearance on the FIFA World cup for South Africa (SA). Bafana Bafana made their historic debut in 1998 in France under Frenchman Philippe Troussier.
While Clive Barker successfully guided the team through qualification, Troussier took over the squad shortly before the tournament following coaching changes by the South African Football Association.
During the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, Bafana Bafana were eliminated in the group stage. This marked their debut appearance in the tournament, finishing 3rd in Group C with 2 points after recording a draw against Denmark and Saudi Arabia, and a loss to the host nation
Bafana Bafana’s 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign in Korea and Japan ended in a heartbreaking group stage elimination. Coached by the legendary Jomo Sono, the only South African coach to have led the team in the world cup, the team finished third in Group B, tied on points (4) with Paraguay but missing out on the round of 16 solely due to having a worse goals-scored record.
SA made history as the host nation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African country to stage the tournament. Managed by Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira, the team exited in the group stage but provided iconic moments, most notably Siphiwe Tshabalala’s unforgettable opening goal against Mexico
Tonight, Bafana Bafana will be making their fourth world cup appearance when they Mexico in Mexico under the guidance of the Belgian Hugo Broos and Rowen Williams as captain
