The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is today commemorating 40 years of cancer surveillance in South Africa (SA), marking four decades of efforts to strengthen the country’s understanding of cancer and its impact on public health.
The milestone also recognises the contribution of the SA NCR in collecting and analysing cancer data to support evidence-based decision-making.
Over the past four decades, cancer surveillance has provided important information on the incidence and distribution of different types of cancer across the country.
This data has helped researchers, healthcare professionals and policymakers identify trends and inform strategies aimed at cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and care.
The NCR was established in 1986 and has spent the past 40 years tracking cancer incidence through pathology-based surveillance, generating valuable data to better understand the cancer burden in SA and inform cancer prevention, control and care.
