A national campaign for equal rights and economic opportunity takes centre stage in South Africa (SA) this weekend as Johannesburg hosts the milestone 10th Annual Silent Walk and Run during Deaf Awareness Month.
The event, taking place this Sunday at Rietvlei Zoo Farm, celebrates key strides made in supporting the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community while pushing for full inclusion across education, employment, sports, and the broader economy.
Gauteng Member of the Executive Council for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile will lead the walk alongside City of Johannesburg Executive Deputy Mayor Loyiso Masuku and Health Member of the Mayoral Committee Ennie Makhafola.
Organised with the Neema Foundation for the Deaf and backed by partners like the Safer SA Foundation, the initiative seeks to dismantle systemic communication barriers and build direct pathways to sustainable livelihoods for deaf youth.
