The South African (SA) Medical Association says medical emergencies are likely to spike on New Year’s eve
It has expressed concern over the increased pressure on healthcare facilities during the festive season. SAMA says increased alcohol consumption during this time of year often leads to a surge in emergency admissions to health facilities putting additional strain on healthcare workers. The Association’s Chairperson, Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa says the period is notorious for increases in patient intakes.
“They are facing difficult times because of the alcohol consumption in our country. You’ll understand that we in one of the countries that are consuming a lot of alcohol especially around this time and this will lead to accidents, it will lead to the overstretching of casualty areas at the hospital and that will cause more problems with health care professionals that are going to suffer burnout with the limited resources they have at the moment,” he said.
