The South African (SA) Men’s Forum is calling for real accountability and tougher regulation of traditional initiation schools after 43 initiates died during this year’s winter season.
The death toll was confirmed by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).
The forum says politicians need to stop issuing empty statements and start making arrests.
Mbuyiselo Botha, the founder of the SA Men’s Forum, said there is currently zero accountability for those running dangerous or illegal schools.
“There’s no accountability, it’s zero,” said Botha, adding that law enforcement needs to clamp down and arrest traditional leaders who are involved. He warned that until authorities stop walking on eggshells and relying on politically convenient statements of condemnation, nothing will change.
